Tens of thousands of Roma live in Austria today. "Austrian Roma" refers to all Roma living on Austrian territory, regardless of their socio-political status. The Austrian Roma are by no means a homogeneous group. The situation in Austria is similar to that in many, primarily western, European countries where the Roma population is generally composed of groups with different socio-historical backgrounds. Consequently various varieties of Romani are used on Austrian territory. These varieties are documented by the Austrian Romani Project. Some of them are also used in education.
